Tuesday, March 20, 2018: Golfo Duce: Saladero Ecolodge and Golfito

Golfo Dulce separates Osa Peninsula from the mainland. Saladero Ecolodge, surrounded by rainforest and accessible only by boat, provided a pleasant destination for the morning.

The mist hung low over the land in the early morning.

Our destination
We had hoped to explore the mangroves here, but that was not on offer. They said that activities changes according to the tides; I thought that tides were predictable...

If we chose to paddle into the lodge in kayaks, we had to go on another hike, so we chose to stay in the lodge gardens with the birders.

The kayakers headed out first.

It was  a beautiful place.

Perhaps a hint of what the mangrove forests might have looked like.
You can get a sense of the soaring trees.
Two scarlet macaws high in the trees.

We did see quite a few pretty birds. I've identified what I could. These are all staff photos as they were better than mine.

Spotted Sandpiper
Black-crowned Titya?

Woodpecker?
Cherrie"s Tanager
Great Kiskadee
I don't know the name of this sweet little bird. The adult is feeding the juvenile. they were quite charming, and enjoying the banana that the owners had provided....my photos. :)

There were many pretty flowers in the beautiful garden.

In the afternoon, we sailed to the port town of Golfito (literally 'little gulf'), located in Puntarenas Province on the southern Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, near the border of Panama. We stopped there to deal with customs before entering Panamanian waters.

Our meals were excellent. The evening meal on the deck had lots of good tastes - beet salad and wonderful ribs.

Anastasia, head chef, with her sous chef
Our wonderful pastry chef, Anastasia, made special gluten-free desserts, twice a day!
She generously shared her recipe for Olive Oil Orange cake with me.

The kayaks were all packed away, ready for another day.
